Double-blind comparative study of two dosage regimens of cefaclor and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid in the outpatient treatment of soft tissue infections.

چکیده
A total of 88 patients were enrolled in a double-blind comparison of cefaclor and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid for the outpatient treatment of soft tissue infections (abscesses, cellulitis, and impetigo). In 84 clinically evaluable patients, high cure rates were obtained for all treatment groups (64 to 85%). Patients who received amoxicillin-clavulanic acid had a much higher incidence of gastrointestinal side effects than did patients who received cefaclor (34 versus 3%, P less than 0.005). However, only five patients with gastrointestinal reactions to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid had symptoms severe enough to warrant halting the completion of antibiotic therapy.

In a double-blind randomized study, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid (AM-CL) was compared with cefaclor for the treatment of acute urinary tract infections in 107 college women. A total of 53 patients received amoxicillin (250 mg) and clavulanic acid as the potassium salt (125 mg), and 54 received cefaclor (250 mg); each drug was administered every 8 h for 10 days. The cure rates at 1 and 4 weeks af...
متن کاملMoxifloxacin versus amoxicillin/clavulanic acid in outpatient acute exacerbations of COPD: MAESTRAL results
Bacterial infections causing acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) frequently require antibacterial treatment. More evidence is needed to guide antibiotic choice. The Moxifloxacin in Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Bronchitis TriaL (MAESTRAL) was a multiregional, randomised, double-blind non-inferiority outpatient study. Patients were aged ≥ 60 yrs, with an Anthon...
متن کاملComparative efficacies of ciprofloxacin, amoxicillin, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, and cefaclor against experimental Streptococcus pneumoniae respiratory infections in mice.
Experimental respiratory infections were established in mice by intranasal inoculation of Streptococcus pneumoniae. Inoculation of 10(7) CFU of either S. pneumoniae 1629 or S. pneumoniae 7 produced a fatal pneumonia in nontreated mice 2 to 3 days after infection. Oral therapy was commenced 1 h after infection and was continued three times a day for 2 days. The doses used in mice produced peak c...

The pharmacokinetic properties of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid when used alone or in combination may be different and show interaction between these two agents that might decrease the absolute bioavailability of clavulanic acid. In an open, randomized, replicated Latin square under fasting condition, pharmacokinetics of new formulations of amoxicillin/clavulanic acid were compared with...
متن کاملActivities of oral antibiotics on Providencia strains isolated from institutionalized elderly patients with urinary tract infections.
More than 250 Providencia strains isolated from the urine of institutionalized elderly patients were tested against cefaclor, cefuroxime, cefetamet, cefpodoxime, ciprofloxacin, and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid. Our results confirm the strong activities of expanded-spectrum oral cephalosporins against Providencia isolates, f1p4ell as the marked differences in susceptibilities among accurately ide...
